Big Bad Earl
Posted 9/2/2010 1:35:00 PM
Earl got your attention yet?
I must admit he is getting mine.
Lord knows we might - again - be getting hosed by undertrained, overpaid meteorologists but ol' Earl does sound as though he may be serious.
It is these days somehow easy to dismiss the notion that a highly destructive act of nature will roar through New England, but it isn't like it doesn't happen.
Ask some of the folks (still alive) who here during the hurricane of 1938.Whole sections of land disappeared. Rhode Island nearly became Rhode ISLAND.
From wind alone this year I have lost eight massive trees on my property, one of which crushed an out-house, another missed by 18 inches cleaving in half a car.
Then there is my house, and my family therein. If Earl is serious, where do I hide them?
And, no, I haven't gone into the village and ...
What was that?

What did I see and hear last night?
Is this what a Presidential address has become?
By all appearances, the the only person in America who wanted to be doing that last night was me.
Obama wasn't quite...there, was he?
What is with the awkward (not to mention hideously inappropriate) pivot from a seven year war with 4,500 dead and 60,000 wounded to My Plan to Build the Economy?
How do you complain - falsely - that we spent One Trillion on Iraq (it is $700B), when you just spent One Trillion (for real) on a phantom Stimulus that vaporized in moments?
How did Anything Obama say answer the one compelling, honorable question the citizenry wants and needs to know: "Did we win?"
And, if so, "Was it worth it?"
I haven't yet seen any polls registering public opinion as to Obama's Oval Office performance.
But I'll bet if it ...
Restoring Faith... in the Tea Movement
Posted 8/30/2010 1:28:00 PM
Whatever else Saturday's conservative (and it was, in the best sense of the word) rally was, it was a strategically Brilliant move by Glenn Beck to put an affirmative stamp on the Tea Movement.
I do not for a moment question that the genuine principal motive of the event was God, Honor and Country - in fact, that is the point.
Because the Tea Movement is by nature reactionary (i.e. a reaction to Obamunism) it makes sense that the early history of the movement were negative - that is to say critical - in nature.
Indeed, indicting your adversary is absolutely a necessary first step: tell the people why we're upset.
This attracts an automatic base of kindred spirits. But to build a wining (i.e. 51% ) movement, you must also furnish background on Who you are, Why you care, What you stand for.
In other words, positive reasons to ...
Palin VS Brown - Round 1
Posted 8/27/2010 1:42:00 PM
So Sarah Palin thinks Scott Brown is a weenie.
In adition to violating Ronald Reagan's "11th Commandment" ("though shalt not speak ill of another Republican"),
this will cause a lot of us some cognative dissonance - that odd feeling of trying to simultaneously reconcile two conflicting beliefs (i.e. "I like Scott Brown. But I also like Sarah Palin.")
Such is politics.
And such is the schism in the Republican Party caused by the Tea Movement.
For those of us 'on the right", being a real Republican was enough.
Then, because of all the phony RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) being a real Republican required being a Conservative.
Now, because of all the phony Conservatives (see John McCain) now being a real Republican means being a Tea Partier.
This will help the cause enormously in some locales (see Scott Brown), cripple it in others ("GOP Too Right for USA").
But is is ...
ZERO TOLERANCE ON TEASING
Posted 8/25/2010 1:34:00 PM
Well, we wanted a tough crack-down on Bullying and now, with today's release of the new state policy, we have one.
Be careful what you wish for, as they say.
As I initially read it, the new anti-Bullying standard seems tough enough - but with two apparent significant flaws.
Firstly, a bully must offend more than once in order to be subject to discipline.
Bad idea, right?
The first time can be more than enough to cause trauma and/or tragedy.
Secondly, is it legitimate to ask if the new policy is far too broad?
It would appear that basic adolescent behavior - i.e. Teasing - will be included in the crack-down.
We all want bullying stopped, but do we really want to turn the class clown into a criminal?
Even at my age I well remember at that age the source of virtually all comedy is somebody else: their clothing, ...
